ARGH

So, anyone who knows me knows that I love fairytales.

Today, I was thinking about Baba Yaga and decided that I needed to find that one and read it again. Which is best known from the book Bony Legs.

Except I couldn't find it cuz certain stupid MOTHERS got RID of all those book once Kerry stopped reading them, never pausing to wonder if her other child still read them once in a while.

And by "got rid of" I mean "packed away in the basement".

Anyway, so I figured I'd find it online, but then I got to thinking of another fairytale I remember reading. Except I don't remember what it was called. I tried googling the basic premise, and I found a bunch of similar stories, but not the exact one I was looking for. I'm hoping someone else can help...

Basically, this is it: A magician/wizard/sorcerer kidnaps this maiden/princess/girl.

Situation A: A prince/village lad/some guy comes and rescues her and they ride off on a horse/run off on their feets
Situation B: She escapes on a horse/runs off on her feets

Kidnapperguy gives chase and as he's catching up, she looks behind her and sees him, so she takes a comb and throws it behind her and it becomes a forest of trees. A while later she looks back again and he's catching up so she tosses back a mirror that becomes a lake. It might or might not happen a third time. And that third time might or might not involve a needle turning into a field of thorns.

Oh and they might or might not've happened in that order.

Anyway. It's not the Mongolian one. And it's not the one where there's an ogre instead of a guy-who-does-magic. And it's not the one where the girl's witchystepmother chases her (although I have read that one before and this one's very similar).

This might be a parody of a fairytale (like The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs and The Stinky Cheese Man...). If it is, then the girl is rescued by a guy and decides the guy is an ass and the kidnapper was pretty nice and goes back to live with him or something.

Anyway, help would be appreciated...

Heh. One of my favorites, actually...I read so many fairy tales and folk tales as a kid. Literally, books and books worth, I still have them all in my room. I used to tell stories to all the little kids. But yeah, I've seen this premise a bunch of times...I think one exists in almost every culture, really. But what you should do is go read the colored fairy books by Andrew Lang (The Blue Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, etc). They're some of the best collections I've read, with a bunch of really gorgeous pictures. Go find 'em at the library!

Yeah, there is one in pretty much every culture which is why I specified which ones it wasn't. ;-)

And that's kinda funny that you should mention those cuz I was on Amazon last night/this morning trying to find a good book of the original Grimm stuff, and I was looking at those and added them to my wishlist too cuz they looked pretty good. :-)
