Network Upgrade Next Week
For anyone who cares, SK got the last of the OTP meme.
idk if you know this, but I'm a bit of a computer geek.
Today I was like "I am getting paid tomorrow! I guess I shall spend my paycheck today!" because lord knows being responsible with my money and not spending it on frivolities would just be silly.
Off to NewEgg I hied and surfed around until I came upon the wireless router I've been drooling over for eight months or so. Soon I'm going to have a new D-Link X-treme N Gigabit Router. You guys, it has three antennae. Oh my god I'm going to be able to get to my wireless all the way down the street if I so choose.
Also I have received reliable reports that, unlike with the POS Linksys and Belkin routers I've used/am using before, I'll actually be able to set up a VPN with this router. OH GOD I WILL BE ABLE TO GET TO MY STUFF FROM WORK. NO LONGER WILL I BE AT
soleta'S GOING "CHRIST WHY DIDN'T I REMEMBER TO PUT ____ ON THIS COMPUTER." I AM SO EXCITED.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
So, for a while, I was using my (elderly) desktop's second internal drive (1TB) as a storage drive. Then, for reasons I have not been able to diagnose and have decided to just blame on the network card, I stopped being able to connect to map it from any of my other computers! Seriously, once a week I sit down with it and try to figure out what's changed since the last time I was able to connect (I moved) and two hours later I'm a ball of "WORK DAMN YOU THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU JUST FUCKING LET ME CONNECT >:O" rage.
So, I got an external 1TB drive and transferred everything to that and... now just live without those files because I can't be arsed to move the external into my bedroom from the living room with my desktop. Too bad I didn't think to get an external drive I could connect to the network, right?
>:)
I've got a 2-bay NAS enclosure coming to my house. It is so fucking hot. I just bought the cheapest, open box one with two bays off NewEgg, because if it turns out the problem isn't with my desktop, but with the network itself, I want to have wasted the least money. But I am so fucking excited.
I'm going to take the internal spare drive out of my desktop and pop it in there. Then I'm going to put everything from my Ubuntu laptop on there, wipe the Ubuntu laptop drive, and put that drive in there until I can afford to get another 1TB drive to stick in there.
And then! One of my printers (fuck off, it was cheaper to buy a new printer than buy new ink for my Dell printer/scanner) is going to become the network printer. And then! I'm going to attach my 1TB USB external HD to the NAS and pray that that means I'll have 2.06TB on my network.
Oh my god you guys, do you know what this means? It means I can schedule all of my computers to run weekly backups direct to the NAS. I have never backed up a computer before I am so fucking excited you have no idea my god. I WON'T EVER LOSE MY DATA AGAIN.
SLIMED TO THE KNEES
What my sexy new network is going to look like, sort of because I forgot to move the external drive from my desktop to the NAS.
