"Hey Mum, what are you doing with the old comuter?"
"Why?"
"I want it so that I can reformat it and make it a Unix system."
"What, you think you need three computers?"
"Actually, um, that would make it four. Cuz, the AppleIIc in the basement? Is mine."
"... You don't need four computers."
"No. But I want four computers."
"... No."

Foolish foolish foolish!

Always always always have a good reason for a new computer. My count is 7 and I can still think of reasons why I need to add a new computer:
* Mobile computing
* Desktop office work
* Dedicated gaming box
* Email / Web Server
* File Server
* Backup File Server
* Media machine (for handling MythTV [OpenSource TiVo] and such)
* Critical services backup machine (which remains offline, unplugged in a Faraday Cage in case of EMP or similar disaster)
* Cluster Nodes for distributed computing ( x a BILLION! )

Never let anyone know that you _want_ a new machine; it must always be a need or you're never gonna get past 3.

Oh; and if you need a reason specifically for a UNIX / Linux machine (Personally I recommend Linux... Gentoo is my favorite distro), then just let mum know that every serious Computer Scientist has a "dev machine" for native C++ support, [rather than sucking golf balls through hoses via Visual Studio].

You can never have too many computers! If I had the money I'd make my extra one into a TiVo too.
