This is getting frustrating.

Something is vaguely busted downstairs.

It's not the router. When my computer is connected to it, I can get into it.

It's not the Magic Black Box of Intarweb Goodness. When my computer is connected to it, I can get online.

It's no the blue cable. None of the other ethernet cords we have fix the problem.

No, the router has decided that it despises the MBBoIG. It has declared there to be a blood feud between the to and it will not end until one of them is dead. At the moment? They are simply not speaking to each other. I can only pray that neither side will instigate an attack before I can reconcile their differences.

In plain talk, something is busted so the router doesn't work. It refuses to connect to the internet, no matter what I do. This is the second one that's done this and I can't figure out what the frell is wrong. So we've been sharing which computer is plugged into the MBBoIG. Which is getting quite frustrating because there is nothing to do in Cowtown that doesn't get boring after the first hour. Hmph.

Without knowing anything else, does anyone have any suggestions as to what the hell is wrong? I'm out of ideas. (ahahaha I said that outloud while I was typing it and said "idears". Someone save me from my accent!)

Hmm. . .

This is a problem that I've dealt with semi-frequently.

Couple of questions:

1)What brand router?

2)What type of MBBoIG? (cable or dsl)

3)How experienced are you in dealing with router settings? (I hate it when people assume that I know less about a situation than I do. . .quel irritation!)

4) How ritzy is your connection? Static IP, Dynamic IP (Server-Assigned)?

Let me know, and we'll get it fixed.

1) LinkSys

2) cable

3) I honestly have no clue. I'm the one who set it up, but I'm pretty sure a monkey could've set it up. So, with that in mind, feel free to assume that I have no bleeding clue what I'm doing. :-)

4) Dynamic. Heh. After the rebooting/resetting/unplugging rigamarole failed to work I'd hoped that someone had gotten into the settings again and screwed up that. Because that would be easy to fix! But no. =( Something is royally fucked.

I'm running XP Pro with SP2, if that matters.

If you can help me get this fixed? You will be my hero forever and ever and ever. =)

Okay, let's start with the basics, then. If you configured the router initially, that means that you've got more of a clue than the average bear, who hasn't the foggiest idea what to do if something isn't on the desktop.

Click on El Monstro link below (I don't know how to build a link in LJ. . .sorry!). It's a very basic config tutorial for a linksys router. It sounds like your router isn't synching to the ISP. It COULD be as simple as "static" being checked. . . but I've always had better luck with a reinstall than mucking around with little numerical settings.

If you've got questions, let me know. I'm actually house-sitting, so I don't have my network available to bounce off of, but I should be able to figure it out without looking. Bear with me. . . I'm homesick for my computer!
