Am very tired. Am also trying to get the first color of the scarf all knitted so's that I can figure out how to switch colors before I take my stuff on the train tomorrow. Yeah.

You can just leave about a 4-tail and just start knitting with the new color. It'll be loose and messy, but you can pull the tails to tighten it up. Does that help? Man I suck at describing shit.
