Suddenly it all makes sense

Google "inventive spelling".

Read up on it a bit.

Now come back here and cry with me.

Wait... what...

You're not allowed to do that!

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2006-06-24 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK.

It's no wonder that kids nowadays can't fucking spell.

AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST USED THE PHRASE "KIDS NOWADAYS" SERIOUSLY. I AM TOO YOUNG FOR THIS SHIT.

::hugs:: it's going to be ok...i'll figure some way out to stop those mean mean people.

Standardized spelling is a recent development.

I still think inventive spelling looks stupid, but nevertheless.

*vomits*

[identity profile] crazyasitsounds.livejournal.com 2006-06-24 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you used to be able to spell however you wanted, even if you were over the age of eight & published.

But, I laughed at this [from the Wikipedia article]:
some research has found that children learn to spell correctly faster if they are taught to do so in a direct and systematic way
Duh. Teach kids to spell & they'll know how to spell. Dont teech them too spel & thei wont now how too spel. *shakes head*

You also used to not be able to have oral sex, even if you were of legal age and a consenting adult.

I've only seen examples of that in English, however. Do you know if other languages had the same laissez-faire attitudes towards spelling?

pas français!

French is (and has been since 1700something... Thanks, Richelieu!) regulated by the French Academy, which dictates lexicography, spelling, and grammar for "legitimate" French.

COMPUTER IS DEAD! OK, NOT REALLY. SORT OF. WOW, WHY ARE WE YELLING AGAIN? ARE WE TRAPPED IN THE ANTARCTIC? AGAIN?

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2006-06-25 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
NO I'M JUST SAD BECAUSE I MISS YOU AND BEING SAD MAKES ME YELL.

FIX YOUR DAMN COMPUTER!

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone compare spelling to oral sex. :) I didn't mean to say that I didn't disagree with your disapproval of the theory [How's that for a quadruple-negative?], though.

I don't know, but I would guess that it wasn't as bad in other languages, which tend to be much more phonetic than English. I know, for example, that Spanish has had a body to oversee spelling &c since the early eighteenth century.

Greetings:)
I am really sorry for intrusion, but it is extremely interesting to me for what acts do I have an honor to be added into your friends list? Unless you speak Russian to read my unassuming journal?

I'm taking a beginner's Russian course to fulfill my language requirement, and figured that the easiest way to practice reading/memorizing a non-Roman-alphabet-language was through LJ.

Your journal just happened to be one of the first Russian ones to come up by hitting the random button tons of times.
