Yes, I'm Still Peeved About This
Oh dining dollars. You are so silly. And by "silly" I mean "dumb".
Dining dollars. You pay around $2000, covered by your student loan, and you get around $2000 on your Husky card to be used around campus and in the general area.
The catch: They can only be used at places that sell food.
The catch: There are only 14 weeks that these dollars are valid for.
The catch: You lose leftover dollars once those 14 weeks (the semester) are over.
The catch: That's over $100 per week that I need to spend.
I don't know about you guys, but I can't spend $100/week on myself on only stuff sold at grocery stores and convenience stores. $50, maybe. $25, more likely.
I shop at Whole Food because it's the most expensive. I get pizza once a week, Burger King once a week, a bottle of Fanta once a day. That does not put me at $100.
It sucks.
But it doesn't have to be this way! You see, we also have Husky Dollars. Which can be used at the bookstore and to get a haircut or send a package. What if we just had Husky dollars? What if the school assumed that we were smart enough to mange our money and not starve to death? The world would probably end, I know, but it'd be worth it.
The business side, though, makes sense. The school most likely books on people being unable to spend that extra amount, so they get a bit of cash on the side. After all, college is a business and businesses have to make money.
That doesn't make it fair or right, though.
That semester is over now. I said goodbye to both the dining dollars plan and a couple dollars of my money. That last week of school, I bought the gods know how many dollars worth of nonperishable items, mostly pasta, just to use up the money.
This year, I'm sticking with cash at Shaw's.
