HI THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT

Okay internet, I am in need of help again. I already posted about this to one of my other journals, but I figure that now, it's time to bring it to LJ.

You all know my roommate situation, yes? To sum it up, we have irreconcilable differences, compounded by both groups of us (as much as me vs. them can be considered two groups) engaging in activities either against our contract or illegal.

So, I'm thinking of moving off campus. There are various pros and cons, which I'll try to list, but I'm not sure if I will remember them all. So, feel free to throw out suggestions in the comments.

Cons:
1) I'll still have to pay for my room on campus since the refund deadline was a while ago
2) To get an apartment I can afford, my commute will be at least half an hour to school and forty minutes to work. And that's not during rush hour traffic.
3) I'll probably have issues (read: lots of stress) during the months I'm in school when coming up with rent and bill money.

Pros:
1) I'll finally have an apartment, so I won't have to deal with moving two or three times a year.
2) I won't have to deal with the stress of living with cunty people. And, make no mistake, that's a lot of stress. =\
3) I'll have an apartment, so my bedroom won't be so cluttered.

Here are two ads that I'm looking at, summarized for your convenience.

$700/1BR - Includes Heat, Hot Water, & Free Cable. 3rd floor of a 3 unit building. 4 rooms, 1 bathroom, washer & dryer in apartment. Fridge & stove. Older but well kept apartment. "tenancy at will or lease....optional" (wut?) No smoking, cats OK, 1 month free, $300 security deposit.

$695/1BR - "Amazing 1BR in [omitted] for March.. Close to Train.. No Fee.. See Today" Range, Fridge/Freezer. No fee. $695 security. (From the same Realtor, there's also a $625 for Feb.)

So, what do you guys think? Please, comment with reasons why you're for/against. I want to make sure that I'm not missing anything.

Have you thought about swapping rooms with someone? Maybe a roommate of one of your friends. I did that & was much happier.

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the problem is that my dorm is rather far away from campus (relatively speaking) so no one wants to swap. :-( It's the most annoying thing in the world, because that's such an easy solution. D: D: D:

I'd consider it for next year if you don't have a better option, but if I were you, I'd be more freaked out by the amount of money I'd have to spend than another semester with hell roomies. Guess it depends on how much you want to spend, really. And if you spend a lot of time on campus doing other things, you may end up commuting later/earlier than you'd like to. Gas, rent, the trouble of moving...I might suffer out these next few months, especially with the coming winter. Getting stuck at your apartment/on campus in the snow would suck...and the extra time for commuting is taken away from when you could be working or doing hw or something.

Just my two cents, good luck :)

This is true... Work-wise, it's not much of an extra commute, but school wise it's infinitely larger. And moving during the winter (especially since it looks like it's getting cold for real now) isn't fun.

Tricky situation. I had a similar problem when I lived in the dorms my first year of college, where I couldn't stand my first two roommates (I ended up having three in one year, though I didn't do any moving myself). I lucked out in that I got along with my four other suitemates and they had the same problems with my roommates (one was bitchy and painfully stupid--I honestly have no idea how she made it past kindergarten, let alone into a decent college--and the other was really weird and gross and dirty and expected me to go to bed at 8pm).

If I were you, though, I would move if I could. The stress of not feeling comfortable in my own space in addition to not getting along with people I was forced to live with would drive me up the wall. I like the sound of the first apartment, too.

I had a similar deal my first year, too, except the girl never switched rooms. It's kind of the reverse of this year, except we left her alone and just pretended she didn't exist... Y HELO THAR KARMA!!

I really like the first apartment, which is making me lean toward moving... And between the sites, it looks like the vote is 50-50. =\

If you give it a few more weeks anyway (which you'd have to do to move into an apartment) more spaces might be open on campus that would avoid a swap and just let you move.

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha I was just going to ask if people seriously move out in the middle of the semester because that's just crazytalk! :-P CLRLY MY BRAIN IS TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING!

That's not a bad idea at all. And it's not like I'd have to make any decisions for a few more weeks anyway!

[identity profile] flukie2001.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There is also a freeze in the first two weeks, to make sure that everyone moving in actually does and to prevent students from walking in and being like, "You suck - GIMME NEW HOUSING NOW!!" Lol. So yeah - there might be other spaces available.

The money stress might get too much. I also know that the commuting, while doable, can so get to you. Unless you can take mass transit and be able to get something else done? you'll be hating having to take that extra time. Then again I always had loads of extra-curriculars.

Ok that said, my freshman year in the dorms was HELL. The anxiety was so bad I'd come home EVERY weekend. Just as I ws getting into town on Monday mornings I would have to pull over to puke. Yes, puke.

At-will means that it you're not locked into a long-term lease. YOu can go month-to-month and whomever wants out can get out.

Now, am I reading that right? you'd be sharing a 4 bedroom in the first one? Oy, and how do you know THOSE roomies would be any better? Of the two choices I'd go with the living alone.

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, overall it's not too bad a commute (no more than I'm doing now, really). And no, It's a 4 room apartment total, so it's a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. :-P

[identity profile] carpediemchaos.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you considered getting an apartment with friends? It might be a bit cheaper, and even though you'd still have to share space, you can enforce a "my things, my space, be gone from here!" rule if you want and they'd be more apt to respect it. I moved off campus at the end of last year, and have never been happier. Like a lot of other people said, you might want to wait a few weeks and see if housing has anything they can do for you. Good luck!

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
My friends are all dumb folks who like going home for summer/co-op, and they all live in Jersey. Otherwise hell yeah that's what I'd do! But thanks!!

I wrinkle my nose at your friends.

dear nire,
I had a similar situation my first year of school. ill skip the knitty gritty but the final straw was finding my roomate and a floormate sniffing crack off my desk at 330 in the morning while i was "asleep" in the next bed.
long story short, drop out of school, marry a guy in the military and work at xtra mart. thats what i did. works great :-D

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I am laughing my ass off right now. HOW DO THESE THINGS HAPPEN TO YOU?!

[identity profile] legendofdougie.livejournal.com 2007-01-22 01:57 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] whats-goin-anh.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm commuting this year and I did last year, too. It pretty much sucks. It's nice to have your own space and all that jazz but the convenience of living on campus definitely appeals to me more. It's different for everyone. As much as your situation sucks, it seems like a lot of money going out the window. Also, when calculating total travel time it may seem shorter than you think but traffic can be horrible and it ends up being way longer than you hope. I say try and stick it out for the rest of the semester and save up your money for housing next year/summer. Good luck with everything.

[identity profile] sarek007.livejournal.com 2007-01-22 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd lose all that money by not just sticking it out. And while an apartment sounds nice and like a permanent place, reality is you'd probably still move a couple of times. No one ever keeps their first apartment longer than it takes to get out of college because first apartments tend to be kind of shitty. Just stay there for a few months, stay out of their way and get outta dodge when you can. Or switch rooms with someone.
