Quick Meme

EDIT: New, better quiz. Other one's under the cut now.

What American accent do you have?

North Central. This is what everyone calls a "Minnesota accent." If you saw "Fargo" or "Drop Dead Gorgeous" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Some Americans may mistake you for a Canadian.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

It's kind of funny, the text is nothing like me, and nothing like what I associate all of those pictures with for the most part.

Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.

I love that quiz, if only because I love reading the alternate pronunciation and saying, DUDE, what the FUCK is wrong with people?

That said, I do not, under any circumstances, have an Inland North/Western New England/Upstate New York accent. I know people with Upstate New York accents. They sound weird as all get out to me, because it is not a standard accent around here. Ergo, I cannot have it. I think the problem lies more in me having too much choir in my blood; that time/ride/whatever question, where they asked if it has a diphthong or not? Hells no. Diphthongs are evil. I ferreted 'em out of my speech a long time ago.

Boston and Northeastern New England for me. Interesting considering I spent my formative years in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, which isn't part of the highlighted region on the picture.

That quiz told me I talk like someone from the west. Last time I checked, I was from Massachusetts & I sounded like I was from Massachusetts. My linguistics major indignation for the day will now be directed at that quiz.

I got Western on the accent quiz. Yee haw!
