Entry for the general public

Right then! I have been in Alabama now for a bunch of days. And let's see...

I have tried:
Fried pickles (YUCK)
Fried green tomatoes (not half bad!)
HUSHPUPPIES (OMG WHY DO WE NOT HAVE THESE UP NORTH???)

I have played with Donna's babies a lot (Audrey wanted to go home with me and ran around telling the gamers "I'm going to Boston!"), taken lots of pictures of babies and cats and adults, and played Guitar Hero lots.

I am also getting to witness EPIC PORN being written, and making them write me hot-wiring trucks porn. SHUT YOUR FACE IT IS SO HOT.

Speaking of hot, I could never live down here. :( I am slowly being braised. Soon I will just be a tender lump of flesh, ready to be eaten with a side of mashed potatoes.

Be sure to bathe in red wine, it will make you more appetizing through the braising process.

Fried pickles are pretty gross, I'll agree. Fried green tomatoes, much like regular ripe raw tomatoes, are one of those things that you have to get juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust right, or they kind of blow.

Hushpuppies are the food of the gods. You're far south enough to get a catfish po'boy... You should make someone go out and get you one. Except, you know, I don't personally eat catfish, so I couldn't really recommend that. It just sounds extremely Deep South. Stay away from natural filters, that's what I always say... Now that you've been exposed to our cusine, you may never eat another unfried thing as long as you live.

Your next mission is to try Kool-Aid pickles. It's too bad, it's really too late in the year for you to get to try "poke sallet." That's a fancy word for "bacon grease on the leaves of a weed."

Hmm, what else, what else? I don't know if they have them as far south as Alabama, but on your way back through NC and the surrounding area you MUST MUST MUST purchase a bottle each of Cheerwine and Sundrop. Best. Sodas. Ever. Seriously not kidding.

PS I recently tried Moxie and, yeah, the South definitely kicks New England's ass at inventing awesome soft drinks. That stuff is disgusting.

Yummmm...fried pickles and ranch dressing! Were the hushpuppies properly greasy and dense? I hate the variety that's all fluffy and dry! >:( One of the local restaurants offers strawberry-flavored whipped butter to dip them in, and the combination is surprisingly delicious.

THEY WERE! They were so good. They were also delicious dipped in maple syrup which, apparently, is SO NOT DONE. But... they were tasty like that... :(
