ZOMBIES
Really, I just want to list some interesting points brought up so I don't forget them.
1) Zombies are filling the ecological role that was held most recently by vampires. We've turned the vampire from some disgusting lecherous gross scary creature (Nosferatu) to something in Armani that's dead sexy (everything in the past bunch of years). Since we no longer had something that represented death/infection/etc. to fear, zombies came into play.
Proof of this, so to speak, comes from "I Am Legend". In the book, the monsters were distinctly vampires. It gets turned into a movie half a century later, and boom! We have zombies instead of vampires.
