Fandom Snowflake, Challenge #2
Fandom Snowflake time, folks!!! And today's... today's is a doozy for someone who is bad at things like "convincing other people to do stuff" and "remembering things about TV shows" and such.
Challenge #2: In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom.
Y'all. Y'all, let me introduce you to the show that has straightbaited me the hardest since I don't even know when: Debris.
Okay, listen. The first thing you need to know is that Debris is not a good show. It's not even a particularly original show. It's basically Fringe, or Warehouse 13, or any other show involving "artifacts that do stuff and need to be collected".
The second thing you need to know is that the draw to this show for me, personally, is the ship and there is like barely any fic for it. Out of what I've read (which is not everything) there's not even any good fic. Of badfic. It's all just. Fic of mediocre quality. Good enough to read, not good enough to be filling, not bad enough to be enjoyable.
(Is this stopping me from reading fic? No. I will find the hidden gems if it kills me.)
SO. Now that I have put you off, let me put you on.

This is Bryan Beneventi. Bryan has Iraq war trauma. Bryan works for the CIA. Bryan has to lie to his new partner about her father being alive from ep one. Bryan is not okay with this and it does not last long.

This is Finola Jones. Finola is smart and capable and badass. Finola works for MI6. Finola loves her dad and knows he's alive pretty fuckin' fast. Finola is chill about Bryan lying to her, all things considered.
Bryan and Finola work for a joint task force between the CIA and MI6 that investigates weird shit happening that's caused by debris (c wut they did thar) falling from the sky from a derelict alien spaceship. The debris does weird shit to people. There's a black market for debris because ofc there is. This is not important.
The most important thing about this show is the time loop-ish alternate universe ep.
The setup is this: A teenager's sister has disappeared and he's the only one who remembers her. This happened after they found a piece of debris under the ocean, which shoots them back in time a couple hours. It turns out! That they have been shunted into different realities and they are desperate to get back to each other.
It's very Folgers of them.
Every time the brother goes back in time, trying to get to his sister, reality degrades a little more. Finola's dad is like "if he keeps doing this reality is done for" and so Bryan and Finola both are like "bro you can't keep doing this."
Of course, Bryan and Finola get separated when Bryan accidentally activates the debris. The two-parter is mostly about how Bryan goes from "kid you can't destroy reality for just for one person" to "sux 2 b reality ¯\_(ツ)_/¯" the instant he's separated from Finola.
Before they get separated, Finola's dad tells her that it's like the story of the penguin and the soldier. When Bryan and a different Finola start talking through the bit where reality is breaking down and they can see into other realities, she tells him the story:
And THEN she asks him who he's trying to get back to, and he says "You." I can't like replicate with words the look in his eyes when he says this but it is the most intense look of devotion I have ever seen. Ever. This dude is in love and he just had his world stolen from him and she's not even the right Finola but he loves her anyway.
The episode ends ambiguously and they don't remember anything. It's very "ok what was the point of this episode then" except the point was that holy shit Bryan loves her SO HARD. SO hard. There is so much love.
The writers intended this all to be platonic, by the by, and have said that Bryan considers Finola to be family, etc. But when the episodes are bookended by episodes about Bryan's Iraq War trauma centered on a woman he loved in a romance way who he couldn't save... Just saying'.
There's a bunch of other stuff going on, but it pales in importance to the Finola/Bryan ledge I am standing on. I've watched this show more than once. I'm writing fic. It's not gonna be good and I don't care. Please, god, join me. Also there's only one season and there's not going to be more so like. It's not a big time investment. You can find it on Hulu or Peacock and also on the salty seas.
pls im so lonely

It's about the soldier who guides a penguin across the desert to be with the one he loves, and over the treacherous passage, the penguin asks the soldier why he risks his life guiding others to their hearts desire. He asks if he wishes he had something to cross the desert for, but the soldier just says no. And once they reach the destination, the penguin thanks the soldier and shares a observation. He tells the soldier, "You fight so bravely because you have nothing, you want nothing because you are afraid to have something to lose because if you did, your heart would no longer be steel." The point of the story-And Bryan is like "You can spend a lifetime hiding from yourself what you truly want" in response.
And THEN she asks him who he's trying to get back to, and he says "You." I can't like replicate with words the look in his eyes when he says this but it is the most intense look of devotion I have ever seen. Ever. Sadly my PVR crashed and I lost all the eps. I don't think Hulu or Peacock are available in Canada. I'll have to check that out.
