Outlines and Proposals and Papers, Oh My!
I'm having a bit of an issue with my research paper. Excuse me for a moment while I go make a bagel. Okay. So, in "researching" and reading about jazz and civil rights and the '60s, I've come to a conclusion. I don't give a rat's ass about the civil rights movement. I don't care how black musicians were effected. If you look at my outline, you see tons of stuff about jazz, and almost nothing about civil rights. It makes me sound like a horrible person, but I don't care. What I do care about is jazz. Jazz forms, jazz musicians, jazz music. I want to change my paper to be just about jazz and the new stuff that came about in the 60s and the new musicians and all the music they made. Screw the civil rights movement. Alas, that topic seems far too broad and I can't come up with a thesis statement. It's not like I can say, "There were all these sexy cool new forms of jazz developed in the sixties and all these sexy cool new musicians and this is why they rock." Grrrrrr. Unless people come up with good ideas here, I think I need to email the teacher and ask her if she has any ideas of how I can change it because I'm worried that my paper will seriously suffer since I've discovered my utter lack of interest in civil rights. Do you think I should tell her that Ella Fitzgerald never made a version of "Strange Fruit", too? |
