In which my unpopular opinions are actually unpopular
- "Fannish activism" is laughable. Protip: tinting your icon green helps nothing, since the only people who are going to see it are a small group of like-minded people. Know what does help? Actually leaving your house and getting information out to people who do not have the same ready access to it that fandom does.
- Captain America is a disgusting character. At the top of the list of his faults is he's the sort who would have supported the war in Iraq because "We're helping free those poor people from nasty oppression and bringing them awesome democracy *_________*" and the writers wouldn't be condemning this viewpoint because he's Captain America and he's always right.
- Fandom's fetishization of gay men and dislike of gay women is fucking creepy.
- Buffy: Not that feminist. Hey, let's have another episode where Buffy's punished for having sex! WOOHOO!
- Fandom: Not that progressive. Fandom-at-large's utter refusal to take a look at its own classism, misogyny, ableism, and transphobia is largely what caused me to decide to mainly participate in my fandom-of-close-friends instead of Fandom-at-large. It's a privilege for white middle-class fandom (aka the majority of fandom) to spend its time and energy (that is, what time and energy it deigns to focus on and talk about any -ism) focusing on racism (just like I'm privileged to be able to spend my energy focusing on other -isms), and the fact that fandom refuses to acknowledge that makes me want to burn buildings down.
Bring it.

Basically, IAWTC. I think it's really, really shitty to portray the character representing your country as Always Being Right. It says a lot, you know?
I mean, imagine if Captain Britain was like that!

What did make a difference was bumping into three young Iranian people in a pub, just after a rally, and them being scared to tell him that they were from Iran, watching them initially deny that they were - that they had been anywhere near the rally - because they were worried about what would happen to their families if he wasn't just some guy getting drunk after a day out.

I don't really have anything to say to that because oh my god. D:

he's the sort who would have supported the war in Iraq because
depends on who's writing him. Ulti-verse? Yeah. Always. 616 Cap varies wildly depending on if the person writing him is a jingoistic asshole or not. He's an easy character to screw up, but at his best, he's, for example, a big fan of France because he admired the hell out of how the French people responded to Nazi occupation.
ALSO MATT MURDOCH MADE HIM CRY ONCE AND THAT MAKES MATT A BAD PERSON, OKAY? YES.

Agree with these so hard. Though I still insist on pushing my head to the Fandom-at-large-oven for some reason, but who knows, maybe I'll finally light up.

And then I cry a little and cut myself off from them again because oh my god how can they all be such terrible people D:

True story: Number 5 was originally "People who ship Mulder/Krycek are actualfax terrorists." and then I was like "No, that's not an unpopular opinion, I'll replace it with something unpopular."

there's a friend of mine who got really upset when Torchwood killed off Ianto. She used to love the show to death, but now she LOATHES it. Plus, she only watches shows with gay in them. ugh ugh
