Tell me something good that happened to you today!

Hey Livejournal! How are you?

I'm working on a paper that was due last night, worrying about a group paper due on Thursday that we haven't started working on yet, and fretting about a couple assignments that are due tomorrow. And I'm trying to work on a fic rec post but I can't until I finish my school stuff so I am kind of worried I am not going to get to it today. So! You have two missions, should you choose to accept them!

  1. One of the assignments due tomorrow is to come in with a list of five objections to our proposed solution to a social issue. My issue is "People living in poverty are forced to eat shit food" and my solution is "Pay people a living wage for god's sake and also increase bus routes and grocery stores in food deserts." Would anyone care to suggest a reason why people would oppose this? I WOULD BE MUCH OBLIGED.

  2. Tell me something good that happened to you today! If nothing good happened to you, tell me something good that happened this week, or this month, or this year, or this century, etc. Let's all cheer each other up by talking about how not shit life can be sometimes!

Now I must go figure out how to lock Benry out of the chemicals cabinet since she keeps chewing on the rubber band and eat a burger.

I watched another episode of Supernatural, and Dean's sad face (or hurt face, or happy face--pretty much any moment of Dean emoting) made me indescribably happy. It may in fact be a crime how much schadenfreude I derived from his Single Many Tear.

Also, it had Ruby in it, and she is eye candy, yum.

Objections. Hmm. Let me channel an old econ professor from the lecture on minimum wage: how do you propose businesses get the money to start paying their employees more? Either they'll just hire fewer workers in order to not increase their costs, or they'll raise their prices to cover the difference, which means that the money people earn doesn't go as far as it would've before.

Also, depending on whether you need concrete reasons or philisophical ones, racism and classism are two reasons why people would oppose it, albeit ones that they probably wouldn't speak aloud as such. It's the whole "if those people would just work harder, they'd be doing fine, but you know what they're like..." argument.

I keep trying to do stuff for 1) and end up getting mad at it and deleting it, because srsly you'd have to be a fuckwit not to go for that.

2) SNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW DAY! And that fic, damn you.

1. I suspect "because they are crap" is not an acceptable reason. LOL not helping. :(

2. I'm playing with my new Ubuntu and it is awesome! \o/

I was several times subjected to arguments opposing #1 which amounted to IT IS THE INDIVIDUAL'S BUSINESS TO MAKE THEIR OWN FOOD CHOICES SO DON'T BE TRYING TO DICTATE YOUR "NUTRITION" AGENDA AND INFRINGING ON THEIR ~LIBERTY~

2. I bought a delicious bulb of garlic today for 39¢. I think this was too expensive but it is huuuuuuge.

1. Objection: paying people a better wage would raise the cost of goods and services, resulting in some spiraling meltdown of civilization that makes no sense in economics but of which people still live in fear, idk.

2. Yesterday over the course of an hour and a half I downed seven shots of espresso and two cups of black tea and consequently did not kill a single one of my housemates!

:D CAFFEINE = A++++

1) More bus routes would make driving private cars more difficult and therefore would be a strike against individualism and lead to socialism or anarchy or something? Srsly this is the option that made me lose faith in humanity the least.

2) I finally got some proper help for my ear problems! Less hellish itching = :DDDDDDDDDDDD

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh shit, that's a good one. Also YAY FOR YOUR EAR!

sorry if this is too late to be useful:

For the first part:
Where is the extra money to pay people going to come from?
If a supermarket was needed in an area, why hasn't somebody opened one up already?

Second part:

I won a buy one-get one on meals at the 5-and-diner.

PS. Mind if I steal this as a meme since it actually seems like something that could be useful this time of the year?
