Well internet! This morning was fun!

I wrote a couple papers, set my mouse aside, and turned on the printer to print them. And the dreaded cups-insecure-filter came up! So I moved the USB connector to a different port, in hopes it was just the port being weird. Alas! It was not! I tried deleting the printer and then adding it again, except when I went to add it, there was no printer to be found.

In the past, this has happened because the drivers got corrupted/fucked up, and since I'd recently installed a new printer I figured I mucked something up there (god damn you handwriting meme!). So I removed the USB connector from my computer, uninstalled the drivers, downloaded them, and went to reinstall them.

Of course, because Canon hasn't updated its drivers since 1993, it refused to install because the dependencies listed libcupsys2, which had been replaced by libcups2 recently. No problem! I can just install the dummy package! Except... no... because a bunch of its dependencies weren't met. And I didn't want to fuck around adding more useless shit to my system.

But hey, no biggie! I can just depackage the .debs, change the libcupsys2 to libcups2, repackage them, and reinstall! EASY PEASY. So I do that, and go to add the printer. Whoops! Forgot to plug it in. I lean forward to get the USB cord, except it's not on the table. No problem, the dog probably knocked it off when he was tearing around the room, I just need to get up and grab it. Except... there isn't a USB cord connected to the printer... at all...

THEN INTERNET. THEN I FLASHED BACK TO LAST WEEK. WHEN I WAS DOING THE HANDWRITING MEME. I couldn't find my Dell printer/scanner's cord, so I took the one off my Canon and used that. And then I never put it back.

And the USB connector I had been fiddling with earlier was the one for my mouse.

I had never plugged the fucking printer in.

I was going to put both of the last interviews into one entry but this got kind of fucking long. LESSON LEARNED: DON'T ASK ME TO TALK ABOUT BOOKS.

From graymary, in which I talk about knitting, linux vs. Mac, using computers, Forgotten Realms, and fundamental books to me. )

POLL: LINUX

What linux distro should I put on my Toshiba?

I want something fast and lightweight. Preferably something where I can get rid of whatever desktop environment comes with it and throw Xfce on there. If there's a desktop environment you like better, I'm open for suggestions there, too.

I'm not sure what I'm going to use this laptop for, as it's heavy, the trackpad doesn't work so I have to cart around a mouse too. Probably photo editing, as it's the only computer I have with an card reader.

GO GO GADGET FLIST!

[livejournal.com profile] soleta and [livejournal.com profile] kisahawklin are here! And, uh, have been since Friday. I just don't care enough about you all to tell you these things.

THAT IS A LIE. YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU.

So, on Friday, we slept. Or, well. They socialized with [livejournal.com profile] darth_cabal while I shouted incoherently from my bedroom. Because I was sleeping. Minus how I was awake and stuff. Sort of.

On Saturday, we went to see the newest Indiana Jones. IT WAS AMAZING. AND EPIC. AND WONDERFUL. AND JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST THREE. AND IF YOU DON'T AGREE I WILL DEFRIEND YOU ON THE SPOT. FOR SERIOUS. NOT LIKE LAST TIME. THIS TIME I MEAN IT.

It was marvelous you guys.

I also went to the Mass Sheep and Woolcraft festival that morning, and Wee came along. We left at seven o'fuckingclock in the morning. Because Cummington is a long, long way away from Boston. But it was fun, and I took lots of pictures of sheep, and said hi to acquaintances from last year, and got yarn so I could make [livejournal.com profile] moirarogers's kids (YES, BREE IS TOTALLY THEIR PARENT, TOO. IT IS TOTALLY NATURAL TO HAVE THREE PARENTS. STFU.) toys for my visit and make Lexi her Gryffindor scarf for next Christmas.

And then we went home. And, ummm. Did stuff? I don't really remember. See, once we got home from the festival, I got really really cranky. And so most of the day, minus during the movie (Wee will testify to my bouncing up in down in my seat and grinning like a moron through 90% of it), I was in a seething rage at everything. And I seethed to wee in great detail. About everything from actualfax maddening things to how angry it made me that I had to breathe to keep on living. GOD THE HUMAN BODY IS SO INSUFFICIENT.

And on Sunday I reformatted my Linux laptop's hard drive and installed the latest version of Ubuntu. Once my other downloads, I start downloading the XFCE version of Debian. LOOK YOU KNOW HOW I HAVE TO REARRANGE LIVING QUARTERS EVERY COUPLE MONTHS? THIS IS LIKE THAT.

I dropped [livejournal.com profile] darth_cabal off at the airport, got lost in Boston (stfu, just because I've lived here for three years doesn't mean I can't still get lost once a week >:( NON-EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY IS HARD, DAMN YOU.) And theeeeen we came home. OH NO WAIT. And then we...

Okay, I can't actually remember what really happened after that. But eventually we went to the game shop near school to get me dice. I chose them based on prettiness, not based on whether or not they liked me, because that is stupid, dice can not like you, they are dice, and just because I chose the set that had the D20 that rolled the highest numbers for me means NOTHING, NOTHING I TELL YOU.

And then we went to Home Depot because Kate's iBook is broken, and I told her I'd try to fix it for her. And because Apple is staffed by fucking morons I needed a goddamn bendy thinger (normal people call them allen wrenches) to get the case off. And, jesus fucking christ, I can't even begin to explain to you how much I hate Apple. LIKE, SERIOUSLY. THE WAY THEY CONSTRUCT THEIR LAPTOPS IS UNBELIEVABLY STUPID. I... >:O

I got it to the point where I could see the hard drive, and gave up for the day. Tomorrow I'll try some more.

Then we played DnD. Sort of. I mean, we played DnD. Yeah. LOOK. I AM TRYING NOT TO ADMIT THAT LAST TIME I WAS DOWN THERE, THEY MADE ME PLAY DND AND IT WAS ALL TOO COMPLICATED AND I WAS SULKING BECAUSE, HELLO, MAKING ME PLAY DND, SO THEY WERE LIKE "GOD, WE'RE JUST GOING TO PLAY AS SAM AND DEAN WINCHESTER FFS >:("

(When I was last down there, we sort of almost got killed by the fishy things because we sort of kind of beat each other up in the hotel. It was pathetic. But also totally in character. And I got a fucking awesome manta ray cloak thing that um I forget exactly what it does but it's awesome. And now we own a fairy court or something or other, idk, I wasn't really paying attention, I was, um, hitting my cat? IDK. POINT BEING. DEAN AND SAM ARE TECHNICALLY FAIRIES NOW.)

(I hate myself a little.)

And now they are sleeping and I am in bed watching the NCIS finale and falling even more in love with Sheppard because I know what's happening and considering getting up and starting on Katie's stuffed animal. Even though I am exhausted. Also I've been doing [livejournal.com profile] inkdot's meme thingy since Wednesday. Just, you know. Not posting them. Because it's too much effort to get the photos off my camera. SHUT UP DO YOU KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO GET THE CARD OUT AND PUT IT IN MY COMPUTER AND UPLOAD THEM ALL AND STUFF?

"What do you want me to do? Hold your nozzle? >:(" GOD I LOVE ZIVA.

More About the Laptop

Well, I guess I've gone through most the stages of grief and am now wavering in between depression and acceptance.

At least I'm learning stuff. That's the good thing about a Linux computer shitting the bed: there's plenty of stuff you can learn from it. Or, at least, it's kind of fun to fix. However you need to fix it.

I managed to clear 60gb on my harddrive by uploading lots of stuff to file hosting sites. It would've been a lot easier had I just had a pack of DVDs lying around. Alas.

~~

It's snowing in Chicago. I'm jealous and sad.

Laptop Update

Well, I spent an hour and a half down with a dude in Resnet, trying to fix my laptop. We tried everything. And, well, basically, my harddrive is fucked to hell somehow. Except it's not! Because the test he ran came back okay! So it's actually the partitions on the hard drive that are fucked to hell.

My only option, it appears, is to repartition. That is, completely fucking wipe my drive and lost everything on it.

But! I can use dd to make an image of it and maybe be able to recover stuff from there!

But it's a 60gb drive, which means I'd need to clear 60gb on my desktop. Currently, I have 10 free. This means going in and deleting a metric fuckload of shit.

*sigh* Fuck.

MICHAEL: One evening, a patient was brought into my clinic in the middle of the night. He was tortured so badly I couldn’t believe he was still breathing. A man was with him. It was the man on your radio. I’ll never forget the voice. He put a gun to my head and explained to me that my patient had robbed him and that he wanted me to save him so the pain would last longer. I did what I could. He said to come here for my money — my blood money. There’s a place between life and death. Amazing how long a man can linger there.
PRESCOTT: That’s enough, all right? Okay. Bring everything upstairs. We’re getting out of here. Tony? Tony, can you hear me?
THUG: What the hell is going on?
MICHAEL: I know this guy. He’ll have people outside the bank, in your truck, and on your boat. You have no idea who you’re dealing with.
